Bayley: The Role Model

Pick three numbers, and have somebody choose one. That is how this week’s article topics went for the wrestling department at EDF Sports. I get to write about the longest reigning SmackDown Women’s Champion in history. Bayley!!

Who is Bayley?

Pamela Rose Martinez was born June 15, 1989 in San Jose, California. She was known as Davina Rose in the independent circuit. Martinez started wrestling in 2008, at the age of 18. Big Time Wrestling and Shimmer Women Athletes is where she made a name for herself.

In 2012, she signed with WWE and was assigned to the NXT brand, underneath the name Bayley. She debuted on the main roster in 2016. Her gimmick in both brands involved hugs and wacky dancing tube men, that she called her Bayley buddies!

Making History and Championships

Bayley has made a lot history in her wrestling career. She is a 1x NXT Women’s Champion, 1x RAW Women’s Champion, a 2x WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion, a 2x SmackDown Women’s Champion, and 2019 Money in the Bank winner.

The Role Model is the inaugural women tag team champions with Sasha Banks. Her second reign was also with Banks as well. Bayley is also the longest reigning SmackDown Women’s Champion at 379 days.. however, the history don’t stop there.

More History Made

Bayley is recognized as the first woman triple crown champion, and grand slam champion in WWE history. The former champion was also the first ever female to defend her title in Saudi Arabia.

Martinez is the third Money in the Bank winner to cash in the same night and become champion. She is the second female to do it as well.

Heel Turn

On October 11th, 2019 episode of SmackDown, Bayley regained the title back from Charlotte Flair, after she lost at Hell in the Cell on the 6th. However, the hugger gimmick no more! She reveals a short bob cut, and slashed her Bayley buddies to pieces. She officially made the heel turn final. It was building up when she helped Sasha Banks on RAW on Sept 2nd, 2019 by attacking Becky Lynch with a steel chair.

I believe the Bayley heel turn is the best work for her in WWE right now. It was one push that was well deserved for The Role Model. History is a key factor for her, and she will keep making history throughout the WWE. As a result, to her history making she ranked number 1, in the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Top 100 Women Wrestlers in 2020.

I’m a proud fan of Bayley. I am also happy that Bayley is on the SmackDown Survivor Series Team. She can make history with Bianca Belair, Liv Morgan, Ruby Riott and Natalya!
