Musician David Michael Frank is in the middle of his Private Party Tour 2: The Encore, but he took time to give me an interview in route to his next venue in Philadelphia. This isn’t just any tour though, as I quickly learned.
A native of Washington, DMF started pursuing a career in music while in his teens. His guitar teacher was the legendary Roger Fisher, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer with Heart. He posted his videos on YouTube, joined a rock boy-band and experienced highs and lows before breaking out on his own.
DMF has millions of social media followers, but admits that doesn’t necessarily translate into successful or profitable tours. Frustrated by the situation, he worked on an alternative to the regular tour approach. With a lot of thought and calculations, DMF formulated a business model where he is in control. Such an undertaking comes with a lot of work and risks, but if successful, comes with rewards for him and his entire crew. DMF discusses the pros and cons of his touring model.
This is a fascinating concept. If it works, and all signs indicate it is working, this could certainly be scaled to any size tours. It could also be another arm of the DMF empire, if he decides to build tours for others.
As intriguing as all of this is, I don’t want to ignore his actual talent and music. I’m probably on the older edge of his audience, but I checked with my nieces and nephew as a better barometer and they all gave rave reviews. Unfortunately, I missed DMF’s Chicago stop on his tour, but I won’t miss him the next time he plays here. I am now a fan of his music and his business plan. I look forward to updates on both.
