Every year, I talk to veteran wrestling journalist Mike Pankow of Windy City Slam to review the previous year and look at the current year. Yesterday, Mike gave me his thoughts on the Chicago independent scene, along with picking the WWE Royal Rumble winners and the current state of AEW. Lastly, Mike analyzed the promoter’s challenge of local talent versus outside talent.
A long-time presence on the wrestling scene, Mike produces WindyCitySlam.com and its podcast. Mike heavily covers the Chicago area scene, but also delivers news of the big national companies. Included on his site are a lot of interesting interviews with local and national talent. If you like wrestling, Windy City Slam is a must stop on your internet browsing.
Mike’s credentials are well known, but the proof is always in the facts. Last year, Mike was high on newcomer “The Bombshell” Shelly Benson. Starting a bit later than most, Benson made up for lost time with an impressive year, winning a few titles, headlining many shows and being named Rookie of the Year by many.
Reviewing the Chicago indy scene, Mike gave his thoughts on 2024. He named a few top rookies, most improved wrestlers and top overall wrestles for both men and women. He followed that with looking at young wrestlers on the rise this year. Moving to the national scene, Mike gave a couple choices for both Royal Rumbles, as well as possible surprise entrants. He then analyzed the current state of AEW and how things could improve. Mike finished by putting on a promoter’s hat and discussing the balance between bringing in proven veterans versus local young talent.
It’s always fun picking Mike’s brain about wrestling. The man knows his stuff. He can usually be found at some wrestling show, maybe multiple shows, every weekend. Watch the video to get Mike’s picks and make your own. Mike promised to be back for a midyear report. Look for that here on theeverydayfan.com.
