On Saturday, the WWE presents BackLash, a premium live event, airing on the Peacock Network at noon CST. BackLash 2024 will be held at LDLC Arena in Décines-Charpieu, Lyon Metropolis, France.
Debuting in 1999, BackLash was the first WWF (now WWE) pay-per-view after the discontinuation of the In Your House PPVs. Except for a few years (2016-2020), the card is built around the backlash of events from WrestleMania. The first BackLash main event saw “Stone Cold” Steve Austin defend the WWF title against The Rock.
If there’s a premium WWE event, there is a Pinfalls. My “The Johngy “OR ELSE” Podcast partner and I are back with our analysis and predictions of the matches. In our fourth year of Pinfalls, Tommy and I are tied at 93-62 overall. I won the first year and am currently up this year, but Tommy won the last two. Surprisingly, we agree fairly often, but we rarely discuss any matches or storylines outside of Pinfalls.
As WrestleMania often sets up storylines going forward, BackLash sees the first seeds developing. How will the new champs do? How long can the reigning champs retain? Who will start to emerge as contenders? Some of those questions will be answered, while new questions will arise.
There are five matches:
Undisputed WWE Championship
Cody Rhodes (c) vs. AJ Styles
World Heavyweight Championship
Damian Priest (c) vs. Jey Uso
Triple threat match for the WWE Women’s Championship
Bayley (c) vs. Naomi vs. Tiffany Stratton
WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship
The Kabuki Warriors (Asuka and Kairi Sane) (c) vs. Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill
Randy Orton and Kevin Owens vs. The Bloodline (Solo Sikoa and Tama Tonga)
As usual, Tommy and I agree about a lot, but there are differences. Along those lines, as Tommy points out, the future could see some big changes. With the Vince McMahon Era finished and the Paul Levesque Era beginning, patterns will be changed. We cannot rely on history to make our analysis. My prediction is we will have more differences going forward as Levesque controls storylines.
