UFL Season Kicks off With a Bang

The XFL and USFL reigning champions, the Arlington Renegades fell to the Birmingham Stallions on Saturday afternoon to open up the regular season in a 27-14 loss at Choctaw Stadium. The Michigan Panthers also upped the ante in the second game, as Jake Bates hit a 64-yard field goal with three seconds left to topple the St. Louis Battlehawks and make the ex-USFL teams 2-0 against their ex-XFL counterparts.

Spring football is back and it was an entertaining weekend. The question of which of the two old leagues, XFL, USFL was the better got a bit of an answer with the old USFL team getting two wins. The Renegades get in the record books as they scored the first touchdown in UFL history in the first quarter, as QB Luis Perez threw a 51-yard touchdown to WR Isaiah Winstead. The attendance for the Renegades was 14,153, which ranks as the highest-attended game in Arlington Renegades history. At Ford Field, just 9,444 fans attended the game between the Battlehawks and the Panthers.

That was actually a great start to the season and if the play continues as the first two games did, then football fans are in for a treat. It was exactly as one would expect it to be, one step above college and a step below the NFL. The only curious thing I found was the kickoff. They used the old NFL kickoff as their kickoff. But the NFL changed to the way the old XFL used to do it. So is it bad or good for the game? Or only is the NFL where it was needed? Such a confusing thing.  Other than that, if you have not watched, give it a try as you will see many of these guys soon on Sunday near you.
