Youth Basketball Moving Into Technology

Youth basketball is undergoing a pivotal shift in 2024, led by the news that the basketball scorebook could soon be obsolete at all levels of the game.

Starting with the 2024 spring basketball season, Prep Hoops, the nation’s #1 independent grassroots circuit, will mandate the use of GameChanger to replace paper scorebooks. The digitization of the scorers table signals a movement in basketball that has already occurred in baseball and softball, with nearly 40 million games scored on GameChanger since 2010.

Owned by DICK’s Sporting Goods, GameChanger’s scorekeeping capabilities for individual basketball teams include “Logical Stat Flows,” where the scorekeeper receives an auto prompt following a shot attempt, making it easier to track stats like assists and rebounds. Stats are automatically recapped into game box scores and season totals.

GameChanger also recently incorporated AutoStream into its live-streaming services. AutoStream is a free feature that leverages proprietary AI software to automatically track basketball game action, requiring only a mobile device. Users who scorekeep AND stream will see a scoreboard overlay on stream and will receive highlight clips that automatically populate on their GameChanger account.

GameChanger expects the impact on youth basketball to be similar to what they have seen in baseball and softball. With diamond sports at the forefront, GameChanger users have accounted for the following since 2010:

  • 40,000,000 games scored
  • 3,000,000+ games streamed
  • 136,000,000+ highlight clips auto-generated
