AEW Dynamite Results (04/17/24) – Go-home Show to Dynasty!

This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite aired live from the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis, Indiana, featuring the final Dynamite before this weekend’s Dynasty.

JON MOXLEY RETURNS AS IWGP WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION

– The show opened with Jon Moxley making his way to the ring holding the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. Moxley talked about winning one of his first championships in Indianapolis. Moxley said that he climbed mountain after mountain before pointing at his IWGP title belt. He said that he chased that belt for five years and the people who doubted him didn’t know what was inside of him.

– Moxley moved on to speak about Don Callis and called him a creep that is feeding his team lies. Moxley said that since Callis put a target on Bryan Danielson’s back, he would put a target on them. He challenged Powerhouse Hobbs to a match on next week’s Dynamite where Hobbs would find out how out of his depth he truly is. Moxley said that Hobbs will know that Callis is feeding him lies and find out why he is the greatest in the world.

WE’LL HEAR FROM MERCEDES MONE

– Backstage, Mercedes Mone called out the b*tch who attacked her last week in the dark. Mone teased the possibility of it being Julia Hart or Willow Nightingale before putting the whole women’s division on notice. Mone said that she would watch tonight’s match because there was a price to pay when you mess with money.

 

 

 

(1) ADAM COPELAND & WILLOW NIGHTINGALE vs. HOUSE OF BLACK (Julia Hart & Brody King) – Mixed Tag Team Match

Willow was found beaten down backstage while King appeared behind Copeland to attack him. King tossed Copeland into the guardrail and blasted him with a chop to the chest. King crushed Copeland with a running crossbody into the barricade. Once the match officially started, King hit Copeland with a corner splash and a forearm strike, as AEW Dynamite went to commercials.

Back from break, Copeland blocked a superplex and knocked King off his feet with a headbutt. Copeland blasted King with a diving clothesline before they started exchanging chops and forearms. King blocked the Impaler, only for Copeland to corner him with a series of corner clotheslines. Copeland clocked King with a big boot into the corner, setting him up for the Impaler and a two count. Copeland caught King with a boot to the face and a blockbuster, but King blocked the Spear with a massive lariat.

King missed a cannonball into the corner while Willow finally arrived at the ring. Willow got a blind tag to take King out with a high crossbody. Copeland put King down with a Spear, setting him up for a corner cannonball from Willow. Hart cracked Willow with a chain behind the referee’s back while Copeland sent King out of the ring with a clothesline over the ropes. Hart immediately trapped Willow in Hart-less to make her pass out.

WINNERS: House of Black at 8:53 (***)

– After the match, Julia Hart tried to continue her assault, until Mercedes Mone showed up to chase her away with a chair. Hart retreated while Mone, Willow and Copeland stood tall.

WE’LL HEAR FROM SAMOE JOE

– Backstage, Renee Paquette asked Samoa Joe about how he sees Swerve Strickland as an opponent. Joe mentioned how Swerve kept on standing back up which wasn’t the prerequisite for a champion, but for a punching bag. Renee asked Joe about his reaction when Swerve and Prince Nana took his belt last week. Joe said that he was worried about disinfecting the belt and put over how Swerve always chokes when fighting for a title. Joe called Swerve a choke artist, but at Dynasty he would be the one choking him out.

– A video package for the Young Bucks and FTR’s match was being aired, until the Bucks decided to cut out the segment. The Bucks gloated about how easy it would be to win a ladder match while Kazuchika Okada told PAC that he would not make it to Dynasty.

(2) THE ELITE (Kazuchika Okada, Matthew Jackson & Nicholas Jackson) vs. PAC, DANIEL GARCIA & PENTA EL ZERO MIEDO (w/Alex Abrahantes)

The Bucks attacked PAC from behind while Okada distracted him. PAC caught Nicholas off-guard with a series of dropkicks, setting him up for a double hip toss and a moonsault & leg drop combination alongside Penta. Matthew got a blind tag to pummel Penta down before Penta launched Nicholas out of the ring. Penta caught Matthew with a thrust kick, setting him up for a belly-to-belly suplex and a corner clothesline from Garcia. Garcia did his dance right on Matthew’s face and knocked Okada off the apron. Garcia took Nicholas and Okada down, only for Matthew to crack him with a Penalty kick, as AEW Dynamite went to an ad break.

Back from break, Garcia made Nicholas crash into Okada before putting Nicholas down with a Saito suplex. Matthew tagged in to stomp Garcia down while belittling him with a mic on his hand. Garcia caught Matthew off-guard with a Saito suplex, reaching PAC for the hot tag. PAC blasted Matthew with a forearm strike and dropped both of the Bucks with German suplexes. PAC knocked the Bucks away with a missile dropkick, setting them up for a moonsault at ringside.

Matthew attacked PAC from behind, allowing Okada to tag in and beat him down. The Elite nailed PAC with a triple strike in the corner, followed by a modified Ushigoroshi from Okada. Penta crushed Okada with a high crossbody and put the Bucks down with a couple of sling blades. Penta dropped Okada with Made in Japan, but the Bucks broke the pinfall. The Bucks blocked Penta’s double DDT and launched his body away. Garcia smashed Nicholas’ boot into Matthew and dropped him with a DDT.

Matthew hit Garcia with a DDT, only for PAC to take care of him with a slingshot cutter. PAC caught Okada with a thrust kick, but Matthew knocked him down before he could go for the Black Arrow. Garcia attacked Okada with a series of chops, until Okada retaliated with a dropkick. Garcia got a nearfall with a jackknife pinfall, only for the Bucks to quickly knock him away with a double enzuigiri. Okada took care of Garcia and Penta with back-to-back Tombstone Piledrivers. The Elite finished Garcia with a double superkick and Rainmaker combination.

WINNERS: The Elite at 12:14 (***1/2)

– After the match, the Young Bucks nailed Daniel Garcia with the EVP Trigger before introducing a ladder. The Bucks laid Garcia’s body in between the sides of a ladder. Before Nicholas could dive from the top turnbuckle, PAC chased them away with the bell hammer.

TAZ BROKERS A MEETING WITH CHRIS JERICHO & HOOK

– Chris Jericho and Hook made their way to the ring while a recap of his argument with Hook costing them a match last week was shown. Jericho that he pulled him off the apron last week and tried to convince him that he should listen to him. Jericho called himself a Learning Tree and put over how people who have listened to him have risen up. He claimed that those who entered the Jericho Vortex came out on top, asking Hook if he wanted to join in.

– Hook simply rejected the offer without consideration, as Jericho kept on pleading. Taz tried to interrupt Jericho, but Jericho shoved him down. Hook tossed his mic away and cornered Jericho to tell him that he would show him how good he is, anytime anyplace. Hook ordered Jericho to leave his ring

WE’LL HEAR FROM SWERVE STRICKLAND

– Backstage, Renee Paquette asked Swerve Strickland about Samoa Joe’s claim that he was a choke artist. Swerve agreed that he had stumbled his whole career, but he always fell forwards. Swerve mentioned how he was put inside a casket, was stapled and thrown into barbed wire, but he didn’t back up. Renee asked Swerve what makes him so confident that he would beat Joe. Swerve took off the mic from his shirt and said that he would come out to the ring to respond to Joe on his face.

 

 

(3) DEONNA PURRAZZO vs. MARIAH MAY (w/Toni Storm & Luther)

Purrazzo picked May’s leg before taking her down with a rising knee and a Russian leg sweep. May surprised Purrazzo with a shot into the barricade and a roundhouse kick on the apron. Purrazzo stopped May as she entered the ring to drop her with a draping DDT for a two count. Purrazzo blocked an avalanche hurracarrana, only for May to immediately shove her into the floor, as AEW Dynamite went to a commercial break.

Back fro break, Purrazzo targeted May’s arm with a double knee drop, following it with a rising kick and an STO for a two count. They got into a forearm strike exchange, until May caught Purrazzo with a forearm strike. Purrazzo tried to put May in a Fujiwara Armbar, but she was able to put her boot on the ropes. Purrazzo avoided a clothesline and nailed May with a pump kick for a two count. May blocked a powerbomb and knocked Purrazzo away with a headbutt, setting her up for a running hip attack and a Tornado DDT. Purrazzo blocked May Day and surprised May with a sunset flip to take the win.

WINNER: Deonna Purrazzo at 8:00 (***)

– After the match, Toni Storm and Mariah May assaulted Deonna Purrazzo, until Thunder Rosa showed up to make the save. Rosa and Purrazzo started arguing, until May pulled Purrazzo out of the ring. Storm tried to attack Rosa from behind, but Rosa shut her down with a forearm strike. Rosa put Storm in a Camel Clutch and smeared her entire face with lipstick to mock her.

– Backstage, Renee Paquette interviewed Jay White and the Gunns who challenged The Acclaimed to a trios match for both sets of belts at Dynasty.

– Backstage, The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn accepted the challenge to put their titles on the line at Dynasty. Max Caster dared the Gunns to face them in a tag match on Collision for old time sake.

(4) ORANGE CASSIDY vs. SHANE TAYLOR (w/Lee Moriarty & Anthony Ogogo)

Moriarty and Ogogo teased attacking Cassidy, but Taylor told them to back down. Cassidy caught Taylor with a series of dropkicks, until Taylor blocked the Satellite DDT. Taylor dropped Cassidy with a rope-assisted Stunner before the rest of STP beat him down behind the referee’s back. Taylor blasted Cassidy with a huge chop to the chest, as AEW Dynamite went to commercials.

Back from break, Cassidy smashed Taylor’s head into the turnbuckle numerous times. Cassidy was able to kick Ogogo and Moriarty away before Taylor pulled him away from the turnbuckle. Taylor blocked the Satellite DDT, but Cassidy quickly transitioned into Stundog Millionaire. Cassidy took care of Moriarty and Ogogo with suicide dives, only for Taylor shut him down with a lariat for a nearfall. Taylor clobbered Cassidy with a rising knee and a jab before Cassidy was able to knock him out with two Orange Punches.

WINNER: Orange Cassidy at 8:02 (***)

– After the match, Lee Moriarty and Anthony Ogogo beat Orange Cassidy down. Christopher Daniels and Matt Sydal tried to run down to make the save, but Trent Beretta took both of them out with chair shots. Taylor clobbered Cassidy with a punch to the face while Trent watched from the ramp. Moriarty put Cassidy in the Border City Stretch, as Trent walked away from ringside.

– Will Ospreay made his way to the ring, ahead of his match against Claudio Castagnoli.

(5) CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI vs. WILL OSPREAY

Claudio immediately hit Ospreay with a running uppercut for an early nearfall. Ospreay avoided the Ricola Bomb, but Claudio countered his hurracarrana with a backbreaker. Ospreay managed to send Claudio out of the ring with a hurracarrana and a dropkick, setting him up for a series of chops. Claudio drove Ospreay into the barricade, only for Ospreay to retaliate with a diving forearm strike. Back in the ring, Claudio blocked a springboard move and crushed Ospreay with a double stomp to the chest. Claudio dropped Ospreay with a backbreaker, as they started trading forearm strikes. Ospreay knocked Claudio off his feet with the Déjà Vu, only for Claudio to counter a Pescado with a backbreaker onto the apron, as AEW Dynamite went to an ad break.

Back from break, Ospreay caught Claudio with an enzuigiri and a handspring enzuigiri. Ospreay knocked Claudio off his feet with a springboard forearm strike for a two count. Claudio blocked the Storm Breaker and nailed Ospreay with an uppercut. Ospreay put Claudio in a Sharpshooter, but Claudio quickly countered it into one of his own. Ospreay blocked a springboard uppercut with a thrust kick, setting Claudio up for a Tiger Driver and a nearfall. Claudio pummeled Ospreay with a barrage of uppercuts in the corner and floored him with a lariat for a two count.

Claudio continued attacking Ospreay with uppercuts, until he was able to respond with an enzuigiri. Ospreay countered the Ricola Bomb with a hurracarrana, but Claudio managed to kick out at two. Ospreay whacked Claudio with thrust kicks, only for Claudio to counter the OsCutter with an inverted Death Valley Driver for a nearfall. Claudio went for a running uppercut before Ospreay put him down with a sudden Spanish Fly. Claudio blocked the Hidden Blade with a massive pop up uppercut. Ospreay countered the Giant Swing with a shocking DDT, setting Claudio up for the Leap of Faith, the Hidden Blade and the win.

WINNER: Will Ospreay at 14:28 (****1/4)

– After the match, the Don Callis Family attacked Claudio Castagnoli, until Jon Moxley showed up to make the save. Will Ospreay was clearly annoyed at Fletcher, Hobbs and Takeshita for interfering.

WE HEAR FROM SAMOA JOE & SWERVE STRICKLAND

– Swerve Strickland made his way to the ring to remind Samoa Joe of how scared he looked a few weeks ago when he stood tall with the world title. Swerve called Joe out, so he could tell it to his face like a man. Joe made his way to the ring, as numerous security guards tried to stop them. Swerve crashed into the guards with a diving double stomp to have a face-off with Joe on the ramp. They immediately started exchanging strikes, until Joe rammed Swerve into the steel steps. Joe threatened to attack Prince Nana, only for Swerve to take him out with a running knee and the House Call kick. Joe stopped Swerve atop the turnbuckle with a headbutt and planted him with the Muscle Buster to stand tall.
